Lowry & Central Park

Two former airfields, rebuilt as neighborhoods.

Few neighborhoods in Denver were planned from scratch the way these two were. Lowry Air Force Base closed in 1994, and Denver and Aurora formed a joint authority that same year to redevelop it. About 89 percent of the base lay within Denver.

To the north, Central Park, formerly known as Stapleton, was built on the site of Denver’s old airport.

The houses

Both areas offer homes that are newer than most of central Denver, in a mix of townhomes, condominiums and detached houses laid out around parks and shared greens. Many carry HOA or metro district costs that belong in the comparison from the start.

Around the neighborhood

Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum occupies a former Lowry hangar. Stanley Marketplace, near the Aurora edge of Central Park, is a short drive from either neighborhood, and the CU Anschutz campus is about ten minutes from the eastern blocks.
